Opportunity – Program Development and Grants Intern
Type: Remote / Partially Field-Based

Duration: 6–12 months (with potential for full employment based on performance and funding)
Reports To: Executive Director / Grant Manager
Position Overview: The Program Development and Grants Intern will support HNC in identifying funding opportunities, developing project proposals, and contributing to program design and strategic planning. The intern will also assist in strengthening internal communication systems and coordinating with donors, partners, and project teams.
This position is ideal for recent Master’s graduates with a background in environmental studies, climate change, or natural resource management, strong English writing skills, and an understanding of African development and environmental contexts.
Key Responsibilities
- Grants and Proposal Development
- Identify and track funding opportunities aligned with HNC’s priorities.
- Assist in drafting concept notes, proposals, and donor applications.
- Support proposal budgets, logical frameworks, and work plans.
- Maintain a record of submissions, deadlines, and donor feedback.
- Program Design and Strategic Planning
- Contribute to the design of environmental, climate adaptation, and community resilience projects.
- Conduct research and context analysis to inform project development.
- Support preparation of strategic documents, project profiles, and technical briefs.
- Communication and Institutional Support
- Collaborate with the communication team to produce high-quality materials (project briefs, newsletters, donor presentations).
- Ensure all content aligns with HNC branding and donor standards.
- Support digital content creation for the website and social media.
- Prepare reports, updates, and documentation to enhance donor relations.
- Partnership and Coordination
- Support coordination with donors, government, NGOs, and private sector partners.
- Prepare briefing materials and participate in stakeholder consultations.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and institutional learning activities.
Qualifications and Skills
- Master’s degree in Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Development Studies, or related field.
- Strong understanding of African environmental and development contexts.
- Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills in English.
- Familiarity with donor platforms (UN, EU, USAID, GEF, or other foundations) is an advantage.
- Basic understanding of communication and IT coordination in development organizations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
- Strong commitment to environmental sustainability, innovation, and community empowerment.
Supervision and Mentorship: The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Program Manager and receive regular mentorship and feedback to strengthen professional skills. Exceptional performers may be considered for full-time employment, subject to funding and performance.
