How We Work
Participatory
Horn Nature Conservation (HNC) emphasizes inclusive community participation and local empowerment in all its interventions across Somalia.
HNC engages community members at every stage of project implementation—from planning and design to implementation and long-term management. Special attention is given to the participation of women, youth, and other marginalized groups, ensuring local ownership and long-term sustainability of environmental, climate resilience initiatives, and community development.
To ensure projects respond to community priorities, HNC conducts participatory needs assessments through consultations, focus group discussions, and community meetings. HNC also works closely with local authorities and traditional leadership structures to ensure alignment with local development plans and community governance systems.Gender Focused
Horn Nature Conservation (HNC) promotes gender equality as a core element of effective environmental protection and climate resilience in Somalia.
Women and marginalized groups are often the most affected by environmental degradation, yet they play a vital role in natural resource management. By actively involving women in decision-making and project implementation, HNC strengthens community ownership, improves sustainability, and ensures that conservation initiatives respond to real local needs.
Gender-inclusive approaches enhance community engagement, resilience, and long-term environmental stewardship.Sustainability
Horn Nature Conservation (HNC) is committed to protecting the natural environment through interventions that respect ecological balance and do not harm ecosystems or biodiversity. All HNC initiatives are designed to work with nature, ensuring that environmental protection and conservation remain central at every stage of planning and implementation.
HNC prioritizes sustainable actions that create lasting impact beyond the project lifecycle. Our programs are designed to continue delivering benefits after project completion by strengthening local capacity, promoting long-term environmental stewardship, and supporting practices that can be expanded and sustained by communities.
In addition, HNC applies environmentally responsible procurement practices, ensuring that all goods, materials, and services are selected based on their environmental safety, sustainability, and minimal ecological footprint. Through these approaches, HNC ensures that its work contributes to durable, scalable, and environmentally sound solutions for present and future generations.
