Horn Nature Conservation Distributes 500 Agroforestry Seedlings to Women Farmers in Galkacyo to Advance Landscape Restoration

Horn Nature Conservation (HNC), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Puntland and with support from the AUDA-NEPAD AFR100 Land Accelerator Programme, successfully concluded a three-day agroforestry initiative (21–23 July 2026) by distributing 500 agroforestry seedlings to 25 women farmers in Godod Village, located approximately 30 km east of Galkacyo. The initiative is part of HNC's long-term commitment to restoring degraded landscapes, strengthening climate resilience, and promoting sustainable agriculture across Puntland.

The seedling distribution event brought together the Regional Coordinator of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, representatives of local farmers' cooperatives, the Godod Village Development Committee, women's organizations, community leaders, and beneficiary farmers, demonstrating a strong partnership and shared commitment to environmental restoration.

A total of 500 agroforestry seedlings — 250 Moringa (Moringa oleifera) and 250 Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) — were distributed, with each beneficiary receiving 20 seedlings. The selected tree species will improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, reduce soil erosion, conserve soil moisture, increase vegetation cover, provide nutritious food and livestock fodder, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen farmers' resilience to climate change and recurring droughts. Beneficiaries also received practical field coaching on tree planting, spacing, and long-term management to maximize survival and environmental benefits.

The project is expected to restore approximately 32.5 hectares of degraded agricultural land. This builds on HNC's previous restoration achievements of 654 hectares, bringing the organization's cumulative landscape restoration efforts to 686.5 hectares across Puntland, and brings the total farmers reached to 461.

HNC expressed its appreciation for the strong collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Puntland, local community institutions, women's groups, and development partners. The organization reaffirmed that achieving meaningful environmental conservation and landscape restoration requires sustained partnerships, community leadership, and collective action.

This initiative contributes directly to the objectives of the AUDA-NEPAD AFR100 Land Accelerator Programme, demonstrating how community-led agroforestry can restore degraded landscapes, improve biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities. HNC remains committed to expanding similar restoration initiatives with government institutions and development partners to accelerate progress toward Somalia's environmental conservation and land restoration goals.
