Biodiversity Conservation

HornNature Conservation (HNC) protects and restores Somalia’s terrestrial, coastal, and marine ecosystems through community-led approaches that connect biodiversity conservation with climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and human well-being.

Our work aligns with national priorities and international frameworks, including the CBD, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the SDGs, and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

As part of the Horn of Africa biodiversity hotspot, Somalia’s ecosystems face growing threats from climate change, land degradation, habitat loss, and unsustainable resource use. HNC works with communities, government institutions, and development partners to promote reforestation, mangrove restoration, rangeland rehabilitation, species conservation, invasive species management, and environmental education.

Flagship Initiative

Our flagship Puntland Community-Led Agroforestry and Land Restoration Initiative restores degraded agricultural landscapes while improving biodiversity, soil health, climate resilience, and food security.

Our current conservation priorities include protecting the Somali ostrich, cheetah, and dik-dik, while conserving the ecosystems that sustain both wildlife and local communities.

By 2030, HNC aims to restore 5,000 hectares of degraded ecosystems and plant 500,000 trees across Somalia.
