Coastal Mangrove Restoration Initiative
Large-scale restoration of degraded coastal mangrove forests along the Puntland coastline, protecting biodiversity and sequestering carbon.
The Coastal Mangrove Restoration Initiative is HNC's flagship programme to rehabilitate mangrove ecosystems along the Puntland coast. Mangroves serve as critical nurseries for marine life, protect shorelines from erosion, and store significant amounts of carbon dioxide.
Since its launch, the project has restored approximately 654 hectares of mangrove habitat through community nurseries, seedling propagation, and participatory planting events. Local fishing communities have been trained as mangrove stewards, ensuring long-term maintenance and monitoring.
The initiative also includes environmental education for coastal schools and livelihood support for communities transitioning to sustainable fishing practices.
